Not so clean cut

This doesn't really have anything to do with my year in cycling (at least not yet) but I thought it worthy of a mention.

I hope that if I ever take a spill and break my collarbone, I don't end up with the same surgeon who worked on Lance Armstrong's shoulder. Looks to me like the guy made his incision with a chainsaw. Yoicks!

UPDATE: Check his x-ray! More Yoicks. I guess they ran out of 4 inch screws.

1100K to go..

Today was a brilliant day in the GTA so I couldn't pass up the chance to get some more klics in, especially since tomorrow's forecast calls for rain. It being only my third ride this year, I hadn't intended to go very far today...35, maybe 40K tops I thought... but I actually ended up doing 50. I have to admit though that the last 5 or 6 were a bit tough. Didn't have much left in the legs by then.

I'm thinking I should have stuck to the shorter route as I'm feeling a bit wear and tear right now. But hey...no pain, no gain as they say. Still not in the shape I need to be in but shouldn't be to much longer if the weather cooperates.

It's good to see lots of cyclists out and about too. Now if only there weren't any cars.

1150K to go...

Considering it's still only the middle of March, I think I'm off to a pretty good start for 2009 and my quest for 1200km. I kinda huffed and puffed my way through another 30k on Saturday but in general felt pretty good when all was said and done. Mind you, I did everything I could to avoid any large hills. I'll need a few more klics in the saddle before my legs and lungs are working in sync and cooperating fully with me so the hills can wait a little bit longer. A couple more shake-out rides like that though and I'll be back in semi-reasonable shape in no time.

This ride was certainly much more pleasant from a temperature standpoint. It was a balmy +6*C this time around, so thankfully no frozen toes to thaw when I got home. Sunday was even warmer around Toronto, and I could have easily gotten in at least another 30k, but rather than go for a ride I decided to take the opportunity to give my bike a good Spring tune-up. At least my bike is back in shape.

Stay tuned!

And we're off...

I've decided to start a blog to follow my year in cycling for 2009 and I guess as good as any place to start is to give you a little recap of my year in cycling 2008. Last year was probably one of my best on the road, and I managed to cover 1054km in total, not including my unmeasured rides on my mountain bike (Note... Being a devout road cyclist, I don't really count my mileage on my MB as I only use it to get around from here to there...and I don't have a bike computer on it to measure my klics anyway).

All in all, it was a pretty uneventful year on the bike, and I'm happy to say I took only one very minor spill and had just one puncture over that entire distance. I did a bunch of rides with the Toronto Bike Network, the longest of which was 98K...the last 10K of which was in torrential rain. BTW...If you're into cycling, TBN is a great way to get involved in some big group rides. They organize a lot of rides for beginner to advanced cyclists and other events throughout the season for both members and non-members.

As for this year, I've set myself a couple of goals, the first being to cycle no less than 1200km in 2009. Now that might not seem like a lot to some, but it's tough to do with a full-time job, family committments etc. etc. I'm actually off to an early albeit frigid start, having completed my first 20K yesterday in -7*C (and probably -35*C windchill). It was a pretty basic shake-out ride just around my neighbourhood here in Toronto so nothing real tough there...other than some frozen toes. It does seem like my bike could use a tune though.

My second goal is to ride 75K in the 2009 Becel Ride For Heart to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation - Ontario, which is being help in Toronto on June 7, 2009. I've set an early target to raise $350 and am more than halfway there already. If you'd like to sponsor me with a donation to the foundation, please go to my Donation Home Page. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

If all goes well, I'll be updating this blog after each ride so you can follow the ups and (hopefully very few) downs of my season on the road.

That's all for now! Stay tuned throughout 2009.

1180K to go!

Cheers
Doug
